Sax Smooth

He’s like the Maxwell of smooth jazz. Boston born, Chicago-bred saxophonist Andre Ward has the suave qualities of an R&B singer matched with a vast musical talent. Saturday my aunt and I went to Gospel Uptown in Harlem to see him perform live, showcasing selections from his third album, Crystal City.

The atmosphere at GU was positive and the food was wonderful (as usual). The entrée I had was so good I wanted to give the executive chef, Kenneth Collins who was taking a break from the kitchen and sitting at the table next to us a hug!! That night I had crispy, lightly fried tilapia, mashed plantains and sautéed string beans with ginger and other spices. All of the flavors flowed together unexpectedly for me and he executed the meal beyond my expectations.

The show was very entertaining, the drummer banged the heck out of his drums and the guitarist looked like he could have sung with The Monkees but played with as much soul as Earth, Wind & Fire. There are only a few things that get me energized and inspired than to see musicians and singers who are just as moved by the music as I am as a spectator. Ward made it a point to play his heart out as well as engage the audience by walking around to various tables serenading couples out for Valentines weekend along with other diners enjoyed his music up close and personal.

What started out as apprehension and skepticism–since my aunt and I had never heard him play–turned into a fun night of vibrant music, food and people.
